A Comprehensive Course on the Practice of Group Psychotherapy
(12 CEs, 1.5 days)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides training and skill development for mental health professionals on issues that are unique to the practice of group psychotherapy including a basic understanding of the theory, principles, and applications of group therapy. The course will include didactic presentations, discussions, and experiential simulated group demonstrations.
This course is suitable for graduate students and mental health practitioners who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the practice of group therapy.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Attendees will acquire the following skills:
- Identify the basic dynamic elements of the group formation model.
- Identify the three phases of group development.
- Discuss the key issues of group psychotherapy leadership and coleadership, including styles, boundaries and problems.
- Differentiate between the key issues, basic theory, and associated techniques that are unique to each of the three phases of group development.
- Identify basic countertransference reactions in group psychotherapy and describe two examples of transference and countertransference.
- Identify three problems that can arise in group psychotherapy leadership and co-leadership.
- Define the role objective countertransference plays in formulating interventions.
- Analyze the role that resistance plays in group process.
- Describe two examples of transference and countertransference.
- Describe three types of resistance typically used by client-patients in groups.

Group Psychotherapy Association of Los Angeles (GPALA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CE courses that are provided by APA-approved CE Sponsors are recognized and accepted for CE credit for MFTs, and LCSWs in California. GPALA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Full attendance is required for attendees to receive credit; partial credit may not be awarded based on APA guidelines. Psychologists report directly to the MCEP using the certificates of attendance awarded at the completion of the course.
